James Finchio and Larry Smith met originally in a high school rock band - Nosedive. With James on drums, Larry on bass, and fronted by vocalist and guitarist Magnus Downs, the group released one standalone record titled "Passion" on April 30th 2023. The 7 track album was inspired by a blend of indie rock, grunge, and the vocals of Alex Turner. Magnus was the driving force of the band, writing all of the lyrics and a good portion of the instrumentation. Magnus would ultimately disappear for several years, leaving Nosedive behind, but these years we're instrumental for James and Larry to develop their styles and technique.
The first ORACLE songs were written originally for Nosedive. When Magnus left, James and Larry would work on those songs, still holding out hope for the future of the band. Ultimately, their denial turned to acceptance, and they began to take their music in a different direction, with Larry's basslines really entering the spotlight. James wrote a plethora of songs at this time about anything from Mobsters to Knights to breakups. The band also had a very difficult time developing a lineup. James and Larry stayed as the foundation of the band, while trying out different musicians, working consistently with Ben Chance and Leo Vargas. The band would play its first show on the 4th of July, the lineup including James Finchio, Larry Smith, Logan Loy, Leo Vargas, Nicko Gillen, and Hero Vernon - a far cry from their first venue show two years later.
By 2025, James and Larry had ironed out their sound and began playing open mics around Colorado Springs. It was at one of these open mics that they were approached by drummer Fern Martinez Batiz. Fern exchanged contacts with James, who took an ungodly 5 months to get back to him. Once James, Larry, and Fern finally jammed together, it was like lightning in a bottle - everything just clicked. The rest of the lineup quickly fell into place, with Vincent joining with Saxophone, Alex on Guitar, and Shane on percussion and occasional drums. James would book their first real show at Thrashers, and they got to work. They would also begin working with Paul Markey in studio, releasing their first single "Flat Tire" at the end of the year.
ORACLE started 2026 out strong with it's debut venue show on January 18th at the Thrashers Bar in downtown Colorado Springs, and a second single "Cher Ami" released on February 18th. More great things are on their way!
